is on the top floor. It also has a walk-in wardrobe, a bureau-desk, and an east-facing view to enjoy the sunrise before catching another 40 winks. The balcony outside has four comfortable Bertoia chairs and little tables to encourage you to relax in slothful delight as the day and the night unfold before you.

one floor down has two single beds (which can be joined to make another king-size bed), a wardrobe, and another east-facing view, this time filled with the roof-scape of Brissac le Haut.

The marble bathroom

has a bath with shower over, sink, toilet & bidet. In the broom cupboard on this floor (not pictured) you will find a vacuum cleaner and a steam iron and ironing board.

The spacious and comfortable Living Room
The spacious and comfortable Living Room

is cool in summer, and has a wood burning stove for winter fires, just for fun, as the electric heating in every room keeps the house comfortably warm. Guests invariably say the green sofa-bed is “very comfortable.” The small bookshelf contains a selection of books, and a large collection of brochures for local attractions in the area.

opens to the vaulted Dining Room and Kitchen. Young children love the long space to play in, and enjoy the "cooking" and other toys provided.

Here you can prepare small or large meals of some complexity, and the space is large enough to accommodate plenty of assistants to the chef. The equipment includes a 4-burner (bottled) gas cook stove with gas oven and grill, refrigerator with freezer over, microwave, electric kettle and dishwasher, plus sufficient dishes, cutlery and glasses and a good batterie de cuisine to cook for groups renting both cottages together.

The Secret Garden
The Secret Garden

is just across the Rue Caterine from the kitchen door. It is flat for wicked family games of Petanque, and also has sun loungers and a BBQ.

in the Secret Garden is the best part of No 5. The table is shaded by its own roof. Most guests take their meals here. No one has ever been able to say exactly why, but it is a particularly agreeable place for outdoor dining that encourages you to sit and relax.

Candle-lit dinners
Candle-lit dinners

in the garden are magical, fantastic - "especially in the evenings, when after supper we sat and watched the sky change colour, content to listen to the birdsong give way to the sound of crickets and frogs and watch the stars come out."

Guest comments

‘Rare to find a self-catering cottage so well and sensitively restored, and with such a five star view.’

‘Well, we came back, as many visitors hope to. We were not disappointed.’

‘Such a stunning setting, pool, and so much tranquillity. Making us so welcome. Our children have loved staying in “Vera’s castle.” The Secret Garden. The draw of the pool is so strong it must be magnetised somehow. This little piece of heaven.’
